Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80) CAS 9005-65-6

Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80, CAS 9005-65-6, EC/List No. 500-019-9) is an ethoxylated sorbitan oleate distribution used as a hydrophilic nonionic emulsifier and solubilizer. It is not one pure compound with a fixed molecular formula, and it is chemically distinct from non-ethoxylated Span 80. Commercial grades can differ by applicable monograph, fatty-acid and ester distribution, peroxide value, acid, saponification and hydroxyl values, water and impurity controls. Confirm the intended application standard, oxidation limits, physical form, packaging and supporting TDS, COA and SDS for the offered grade.

Product Description

Product overview

Polysorbate 80 (CAS 9005-65-6, EC/List 500-019-9), commonly called Tween 80, is a nonionic surfactant and oil-in-water emulsifier made by ethoxylating sorbitan oleate esters. It is a distribution of polyoxyethylene sorbitan partial oleate esters, not one discrete molecule; C₆₄H₁₂₄O₂₆ is only a nominal average representation and should not be presented as an exact formula. Commercial quality is controlled by monograph or supplier tests such as acid, saponification and hydroxyl values, water, peroxide value, oxyethylene content and relevant impurities, rather than a simple 99% purity claim. Grades are selected for industrial, cosmetic, food or pharmaceutical applications according to the required compliance documents. Polysorbate 80 is hydrophilic and generally used for oil-in-water emulsification and solubilization. It is not Span 80: Span 80 is non-ethoxylated sorbitan monooleate, CAS 1338-43-8, and is much more lipophilic. Confirm the applicable grade, COA, TDS, SDS and packaging before purchase.

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain

  • Q:

Does CAS 9005-65-6 by itself identify an equivalent Polysorbate 80 grade?

A: No. Polysorbate 80 is a distribution of ethoxylated sorbitan oleate esters, not one discrete molecule. The CAS identifies the material family; it does not set oleate distribution, peroxide value, water, acid or hydroxyl values, or suitability for an end-use monograph. Release data and test methods must define the grade.
  • Q:

Why should the intended standard be stated before comparing Polysorbate 80 grades?

A: Food, cosmetic, technical and pharmacopeial uses can require different identity, impurity, oxidation and documentary controls. A material labelled Polysorbate 80 or Tween 80 is not automatically suitable across all intended uses. The requested standard, market and application should be fixed before reviewing a COA or an alternative grade.
  • Q:

Which oxidation-related checks matter for Polysorbate 80 in a sensitive formulation?

A: Because the oleate residue is unsaturated, oxidation control should be assessed alongside appearance and odour. Agree the peroxide-value limit, storage protection, product age and any formulation-specific limits in advance. A nominal HLB value alone cannot control oxidation-related risk or establish equivalence between commercial grades.
