Product Description

Propionic Acid, CAS 79-09-4, is a short-chain carboxylic acid also named propanoic acid or methylacetic acid; the EC/EINECS number is 201-176-3.

Synonyms: Propanoic acid; Methylacetic acid; Ethylformic acid; Propionic carboxylic acid.

CAS: 79-09-4.

Molecular formula: C₃H₆O₂.

Molecular weight: 74.08.

EC number: 201-176-3.

It is a clear, colorless liquid with a pungent odor that is miscible with water, ethanol, chloroform and ether.

Typical properties include melting point about -20.8 °C, boiling point about 141 °C, flash point about 52 °C (closed cup), and relative density about 0.99 at 25 °C.

It is widely used to produce calcium and sodium propionate, grain and feed preservatives, herbicides and pharmaceutical intermediates.

It also serves as a reactive acid intermediate in ester and salt formation, and in selected industrial applications such as coatings, and flavor and fragrance precursors.

Confirm assay, water content, color, acidity and related organic acid impurities; food and feed grades require stricter purity, lower heavy metals and tighter odor or color limits than industrial grade.

Propionic acid is corrosive and flammable. Store in tightly closed, corrosion-resistant containers in a cool, dry, ventilated area away from heat, sparks, open flames, direct sunlight and strong oxidizers, and use chemical-resistant PPE and eye protection.

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain

  • Q:

What is Propionic Acid and how is it identified?

A: Propionic acid, also called propanoic acid or methylacetic acid, has CAS 79-09-4, molecular formula C₃H₆O₂ and molecular weight 74.08. It is a short-chain carboxylic acid that appears as a colorless liquid with a pungent odor.
  • Q:

What is Propionic Acid used for?

A: Propionic acid is used to produce calcium and sodium propionate, grain and feed preservatives, herbicides and pharmaceutical intermediates. It also serves as a reactive acid intermediate in ester and salt formation.
  • Q:

Which specifications should be confirmed when purchasing Propionic Acid?

A: Confirm assay, water content, color, acidity and related organic acid impurities. The required limits should match the intended use, such as preservative production, salt synthesis or general industrial processing.
  • Q:

What is the difference between food or feed grade and industrial grade Propionic Acid?

A: Food and feed applications typically require stricter purity, lower heavy metals and tighter odor or color limits. Industrial grade may still be suitable for many chemical processes, but the application and regulatory limits determine which grade is appropriate.
  • Q:

How should Propionic Acid be stored and handled?

A: Propionic acid is corrosive and flammable. Store it in tightly closed, corrosion-resistant containers in a cool, dry, ventilated area away from heat, sparks, open flames, direct sunlight and strong oxidizers, and use chemical-resistant PPE and eye protection.
