Product Description

Para-Xylene (p-Xylene), CAS 106-42-3, is an aromatic hydrocarbon also named 1,4-dimethylbenzene; the EC/EINECS number is 203-396-5.

Synonyms: 1,4-Dimethylbenzene; p-Xylol; p-Methyltoluene; 1,4-Xylene; Para-xylol.

CAS: 106-42-3.

Molecular formula: C₈H₁₀.

Molecular weight: 106.17.

EC number: 203-396-5.

It is a clear, colorless, flammable liquid that can crystallize at low temperatures and is miscible with most organic solvents but only slightly soluble in water.

Typical properties include melting point about 13 °C, boiling point about 138 °C, flash point about 27 °C (closed cup), relative density about 0.861 at 20 °C and refractive index about 1.496.

It is mainly oxidized to purified terephthalic acid (PTA), which is used to make PET and polyester resins for fibers, films, sheets and containers.

It is also used in the manufacture of dimethyl terephthalate, coatings, dyes, solvents and selected agrochemical or fine-chemical intermediates.

Confirm assay, ortho- and meta-xylene isomer content, sulfur, moisture, color and non-aromatic content; polymer-grade para-xylene is normally high purity because these impurities affect downstream PET and polyester quality.

Store in tightly closed, grounded containers in a cool, ventilated flammable-liquid area away from heat, sparks, open flames and strong oxidizers. It is flammable with a flash point near 27 °C, so use vapor controls, static bonding and appropriate PPE.

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain

  • Q:

What is Para-Xylene and how is it identified?

A: Para-xylene is an aromatic hydrocarbon with CAS 106-42-3, molecular formula C₈H₁₀ and molecular weight 106.17. It is also called p-xylene, 1,4-dimethylbenzene or 1,4-xylene, and has two methyl groups at the 1 and 4 positions on benzene.
  • Q:

    What is Para-Xylene used for?

A: It is mainly oxidized to purified terephthalic acid, which is used to make PET and polyester resins for fibers, films, sheets and containers. Para-xylene is also used in coatings, dyes, solvents and selected agrochemical or fine-chemical intermediates.
  • Q:

Which specifications should be confirmed when purchasing Para-Xylene?

A: Confirm assay, ortho- and meta-xylene isomer content, sulfur, moisture, color and non-aromatic content. Polymer-grade para-xylene is normally high purity because these impurities affect downstream PET and polyester quality.
  • Q:

How should Para-Xylene be stored and handled?

A: Store in tightly closed, grounded containers in a cool, ventilated flammable-liquid area away from heat, sparks, open flames and strong oxidizers. It is a flammable liquid with a flash point near 27 °C, so use vapor controls, static bonding and appropriate PPE.
  • Q:

What are the key physical properties of Para-Xylene?

A: Para-xylene is a colorless flammable liquid that can crystallize at low temperatures, with a melting point near 13 °C, boiling point near 138 °C, flash point near 27 °C and density about 0.861 g/mL at 20 °C. It is only slightly soluble in water but miscible with common organic solvents.
