Product Description

Ortho-Xylene is the aromatic hydrocarbon isomer 1,2-dimethylbenzene identified by CAS 95-47-6 and EC/EINECS 202-422-2.

Synonyms: o-Xylene; 1,2-Dimethylbenzene; Orthoxylene; o-Xylol; 2-Methyltoluene.

CAS: 95-47-6.

Molecular formula: C₆H₄(CH₃)₂.

Molecular weight: 106.16.

EC number: 202-422-2.

It is a colorless transparent liquid with melting point about -25 °C, boiling point about 144.4 °C, density about 0.879 g/mL at 20 °C, flash point about 30 °C, and refractive index about 1.505.

It is insoluble in water and miscible with ethanol, ether, chloroform, and most other organic solvents.

The largest use is as feedstock for catalytic oxidation to phthalic anhydride, for phthalate plasticizers, alkyd and unsaturated polyester resins, and dye intermediates.

It is also used as an industrial solvent in paints, varnishes, printing inks, adhesives, dyes, and rubber, and in routes to isophthalic acid or terephthalic acid.

It is flammable (UN 1307); confirm handling, storage, and transport against the current SDS.

Confirm ortho-isomer assay, meta- and para-xylene limits, sulfur, water, color, and distillation range for the intended use.

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain

  • Q:

    What is Ortho-Xylene CAS 95-47-6?

A: Ortho-Xylene is the aromatic hydrocarbon isomer 1,2-dimethylbenzene, identified by CAS 95-47-6 and molecular formula C₆H₄(CH₃)₂. It is also called o-xylene or orthoxylene. It differs from meta-xylene and para-xylene, which have different CAS numbers and are not direct substitutes.
  • Q:

What is Ortho-Xylene mainly used for?

A: The largest use of ortho-xylene is as feedstock for catalytic oxidation to phthalic anhydride, which is then used to make phthalate plasticizers, alkyd resins, unsaturated polyester resins, and dye intermediates. It is also used as an industrial solvent in paints, varnishes, printing inks, adhesives, dyes, and rubber, and in routes to isophthalic acid or terephthalic acid.
  • Q:

What grades and typical properties should be confirmed?

A: Industrial ortho-xylene is commonly around 99%, with high-purity grades available above 99.0%. Typical properties include a melting point near -25 °C, boiling range near 143-145 °C, density about 0.879 g/mL, low water solubility, and a flash point near 31-33 °C. Confirm ortho-isomer assay, meta- and para-xylene limits, sulfur, water, color, and distillation range for the intended use.
  • Q:

How should Ortho-Xylene be stored and handled?

A: Store ortho-xylene in tightly closed, grounded containers in a cool, well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks, open flames, and strong oxidizers. Use vapor controls and avoid static accumulation when transferring the flammable liquid. Use appropriate PPE and normal solvent-handling procedures.
