Squalane is typically a clear, colorless oily liquid. Confirm appearance, assay and density at a stated temperature against the supplied grade’s TDS and COA.

Published reference values for squalane include a relative density near 0.81, a refractive index near 1.45 and a melting point near -38 °C. These are reference values, not batch specifications; confirm the exact-grade TDS and SDS, including flash point and test conditions.

Squalane is insoluble in water and compatible with many cosmetic oils. Check solubility and phase stability in the intended solvent and complete formulation.

It is used as a lightweight emollient and skin-conditioning agent in facial oils, moisturizers, serums, hair products and lip care.

Squalane is also used as an emollient in topical pharmaceutical formulations when supported by the appropriate grade documentation. Do not confuse it with squalene (CAS 111-02-4), the unsaturated starting material used to produce squalane.

It differs from squalene by being the hydrogenated, saturated form; CAS 111-01-3 is more oxidation-stable than squalene CAS 111-02-4.
