Product Description

Industrial applications

Formic acid is also known as methanoic acid. It is used for acidification and pH control in leather and textile processing. It also serves as a raw material or auxiliary in chemical synthesis and as an ingredient in selected industrial cleaning formulations. The concentration and compatibility requirements depend on the process.

Concentration and quality requirements

Choose the acid content on a mass basis together with the permitted water content. For a repeat purchase, include the specification you currently use so the quotation can be matched to the same acceptance criteria.

Depending on the application, purchasing controls may include appearance, colour, acid assay and limits for inorganic impurities or non-volatile residue. We can agree the relevant specification with your order; a generic product name alone does not define all quality limits. Industrial use does not by itself establish food, feed or pharmaceutical suitability.

Packaging and handling

Discuss drum or IBC requirements with your quantity and destination. Container material, closures and pressure-relief arrangements must suit the offered concentration and handling conditions. Packaging illustrations show the container format and do not establish the final pack size.

Formic acid is corrosive. Follow the current SDS for the offered concentration, use compatible transfer equipment and keep the product away from incompatible materials. Storage conditions and transport classification must be taken from that product-specific document.

Documents and bulk quotation

We can provide a Certificate of Analysis (COA), Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the offered product. These documents serve different purposes: quality results, technical information and safe handling.

Send us your application and approximate quantity to start a bulk quotation. Your target concentration, packing preference and destination help us discuss the appropriate offer.

Related raw materials for process selection

In leather processing, sodium formate is a related process chemical with a different role from the free acid. Calcium formate is another formate salt; the construction-grade product has a different application and cannot be treated as an equivalent liquid acid.

For acid selection in pH-controlled processes, compare the requirements for glacial acetic acid and citric acid. Acid strength, concentration, compatibility and the intended process must be considered before making a substitution.

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain

  • Q:

Are formic acid and methanoic acid the same chemical?

A: Yes. Formic acid and methanoic acid refer to CAS 64-18-6. Sodium formate and calcium formate are salts of this acid and are different products.
  • Q:

How should I select a formic acid concentration?

A: Select the acid concentration and water content for your process, alongside the required impurity limits. Different concentrations are not interchangeable on an equal-weight basis. Share your target specification or application so we can discuss the appropriate quotation.
  • Q:

What information helps you quote bulk formic acid?

A: Start with your intended use and approximate quantity. Add your target concentration, packing preference and destination if known; we can discuss the remaining details with you. COA, TDS and SDS can be provided for the offered product.
