Sodium Hexametaphosphate (SHMP) CAS 10124-56-8

Sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), CAS 10124-56-8, is a water-soluble condensed phosphate used for hardness-ion sequestration and solid-particle dispersion in industrial formulations. Common applications include water treatment, detergents, ceramic slips and mineral-processing slurries.

For bulk enquiries, tell us your application and approximate quantity. We can discuss the required phosphate specification, particle form and packing for your process.

Product Description

Industrial sequestration and dispersion

Sodium hexametaphosphate helps bind calcium and magnesium ions and disperse suspended solids. These functions are useful where water hardness or particle aggregation interferes with a process. Performance depends on water chemistry, concentration and the rest of the formulation; the product is selected for the particular treatment or manufacturing line.

  • Industrial water treatment: SHMP is used in sequestration and deposit-control programmes where the water analysis and operating conditions support phosphate treatment.
  • Detergents and industrial cleaning: hardness control and soil dispersion can support a formulated cleaning system. It is not a complete detergent on its own.
  • Ceramics and mineral processing: SHMP is considered as a deflocculant for clay suspensions and as a dispersing aid in process slurries. Evaluate viscosity and settling behaviour in the actual suspension.
  • Textile processing and drilling fluids: selected formulations use SHMP for water conditioning or dispersion; the required grade depends on the process.

Selecting an SHMP specification

Commercial SHMP is a condensed phosphate material. The conventional formula (NaPO₃)₆ does not guarantee that every commercial grade consists of one pure cyclic hexamer. Phosphate chain distribution and physical form can affect selection, so compare complete specifications rather than relying only on the product abbreviation.

Useful purchasing parameters include total phosphate reported as P₂O₅, inactive phosphate, water-insoluble matter, pH at a stated solution concentration, iron and particle-size distribution. The P₂O₅ figure is a phosphate-content reporting basis, not automatically a single-compound purity figure. The quoted grade should state the agreed limits and test methods.

Related formulation raw materials

For condensed-phosphate selection, compare sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) and tetrasodium pyrophosphate (TSPP). Their phosphate structure and alkalinity differ from SHMP, so they are comparison materials rather than automatic substitutes.

In industrial-cleaning development, sodium metasilicate can supply an alkaline builder function, while sodium gluconate offers a different chelation option. The choice or combination depends on the substrate, operating pH and compatibility tests.

Packing, storage and handling

SHMP is handled as a dry solid. Protect the product from moisture, keep containers closed and store in a dry, ventilated area. Avoid unnecessary dust when opening and transferring powder, and follow the applicable Safety Data Sheet for handling precautions. Discuss the bag size, moisture barrier and pallet arrangement needed for your order. Any packaging image is an illustration; actual packing is agreed with the quotation.

Bulk quotation and documents

We can provide the applicable Certificate of Analysis (COA), Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for specification and handling review. Send us your intended application and approximate quantity to start a bulk quotation. A target specification, packing preference and destination help us prepare a relevant offer.

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain

  • Q:

Is SHMP the same product as sodium tripolyphosphate?

A: No. SHMP is sodium hexametaphosphate, CAS 10124-56-8. Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), CAS 7758-29-4, is a different condensed phosphate. Both may be considered for sequestration or dispersion, but alkalinity, dissolution and formulation performance differ, so substitution requires application testing.
  • Q:

Does a P₂O₅ percentage describe SHMP purity?

A: Not by itself. P₂O₅ is the reporting basis for phosphate content. It should not be read as the percentage of a single pure hexamer. Compare total and inactive phosphate, water-insoluble matter, pH test conditions and particle form against the agreed specification.
  • Q:

What information helps you quote bulk SHMP?

A: Send us the intended use and approximate quantity. If available, include your target phosphate specification, preferred particle form, packing and destination. We can provide the applicable COA, TDS and SDS and discuss the remaining order requirements.
