Product Description

Ethyl Methacrylate (EMA), CAS 97-63-2, is a methacrylate ester also named ethyl 2-methylprop-2-enoate; the EC/EINECS number is 202-597-5.

Synonyms: EMA; Ethyl 2-methylacrylate; Ethyl 2-methylprop-2-enoate; Methacrylic acid ethyl ester.

CAS: 97-63-2.

Molecular formula: C₆H₁₀O₂.

Molecular weight: 114.14.

EC number: 202-597-5.

It is a clear, colorless, flammable liquid that is slightly soluble in water and miscible with ethanol, ether and most organic solvents.

Typical properties include melting point about -75 °C, boiling point about 118-119 °C, flash point about 20 °C (open cup), relative density about 0.917 and refractive index about 1.413.

It is widely used as a methacrylate monomer to make polymers and copolymers, synthetic resins, acrylic sheets, coatings and adhesives through free-radical polymerization.

It is also used in specialty coatings, oil additives and copolymerization with other acrylic or vinyl monomers to tune hardness, flexibility and adhesion.

Confirm assay, water content, color, acidity and the type and level of polymerization inhibitor; 10-20 ppm MEHQ is a common standard with customized options, so the grade should match the intended polymerization or coating process.

EMA can polymerize prematurely if the inhibitor is depleted or storage temperature is too high. Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, ventilated flammable-liquid area away from heat, sparks, open flames and strong oxidizers, and protect from direct sunlight.

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain

  • Q:

What is Ethyl Methacrylate and how is it identified?

A: Ethyl methacrylate, commonly called EMA, has CAS 97-63-2, molecular formula C₆H₁₀O₂ and molecular weight 114.14. Its IUPAC name is ethyl 2-methylprop-2-enoate, and it is also known as ethyl 2-methylacrylate.
  • Q:

What is Ethyl Methacrylate used for?

A: EMA is a methacrylate monomer used to produce polymers and copolymers, synthetic resins, acrylic sheets, coatings and adhesives. Its reactive methacrylate group supports free-radical polymerization and copolymerization with other acrylic or vinyl monomers.
  • Q:

Which specifications should be confirmed when purchasing Ethyl Methacrylate?

A: Confirm assay, water content, color, acidity and the type and level of polymerization inhibitor. The product page lists 10-20 ppm MEHQ as standard with customized inhibitor options, so the exact grade should match the intended polymerization or coating process.
  • Q:

Why is inhibitor content important for Ethyl Methacrylate?

A: EMA can polymerize prematurely if inhibitor is depleted or storage temperature is too high. MEHQ or another phenolic inhibitor helps stabilize the monomer during storage and transport, and the required inhibitor range depends on the downstream process.
  • Q:

How should Ethyl Methacrylate be stored and handled?

A: Store EMA in tightly closed containers in a cool, ventilated flammable-liquid area away from heat, sparks, open flames and strong oxidizers. Protect it from direct sunlight, monitor inhibitor level and storage temperature, and use grounding, vapor controls and suitable PPE.
