    Docosyltrimethylammonium Methyl Sulphate, CAS 81646-13-1, also known as behentrimonium methosulfate or BTMS, is a cationic quaternary ammonium compound; the EC/EINECS number is 279-791-1.

    It is supplied as white to off-white waxy flakes or pastilles, commonly as BTMS-50 with about 50% active behentrimonium methosulfate in a fatty alcohol matrix.

    A 2–5% aqueous dispersion has a pH of about 5.0–7.0; the melting range of the waxy flakes is about 60–70 °C.

    It is dispersible in warm water and soluble in ethanol and isopropanol; the pure salt has very low water solubility.

    It provides detangling, softening and antistatic conditioning on hair in shampoos, conditioners and creams.

    It acts as a cationic primary emulsifier in oil-in-water emulsions, especially with cetearyl alcohol or similar fatty alcohols.

    It is used in skin-care lotions, creams and body-care products as a conditioning emulsifier with a silky after-feel.

    It is used in fabric softeners and textile conditioners as a cationic softening and antistatic agent.

    It is best used in cationic or nonionic systems; direct high-level combination with anionic surfactants should be tested for compatibility.
