Product Description
Dimethyl Hydrogen Phosphite (DMP), CAS 868-85-9, is a dialkyl phosphite also named dimethyl phosphite or phosphorous acid dimethyl ester; the EC/EINECS number is 212-783-8.
Synonyms: Dimethyl phosphite; DMP; Phosphorous acid dimethyl ester; Dimethyl acid phosphite.
CAS: 868-85-9.
Molecular formula: C₂H₇O₃P.
Molecular weight: 110.05.
EC number: 212-783-8.
It is a clear, colorless, mobile liquid with a characteristic odor.
Typical properties include boiling point about 170-171 °C at atmospheric pressure (56.5 °C at 1.07 kPa), flash point about 29 °C, relative density about 1.20 and refractive index about 1.400-1.410.
It is widely used as an organophosphorus intermediate for pesticides, including glyphosate-related chemistry, and for flame retardants and other phosphorus chemicals.
It is also used in lubricant additives, corrosion inhibitors, water-treatment chemicals, textile finishing, adhesives and specialty organic synthesis, where the reactive P-H bond supports addition, condensation, oxidation and coupling reactions.
Confirm assay, color, water content, acidity and related phosphorus impurities; the batch analysis should also show the level of hydrolyzed or oxidized by-products that could affect downstream reactivity.
Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, ventilated area away from heat, sparks, open flames, strong oxidizers, acid chlorides, strong bases and moisture. Use suitable PPE because the material is flammable and can be harmful by skin contact.

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain
-
Q:
What is Dimethyl Hydrogen Phosphite and how is it identified?
A: Dimethyl hydrogen phosphite is a dialkyl phosphite with CAS 868-85-9, molecular formula C₂H₇O₃P and molecular weight 110.05. It is also called dimethyl phosphite, DMP or phosphorous acid dimethyl ester. -
Q:
Which specifications should be confirmed when purchasing Dimethyl Hydrogen Phosphite?
A: Confirm assay, color, water content, acidity and related phosphorus impurities. The batch analysis should also show the level of hydrolyzed or oxidized by-products that could affect reactivity in downstream synthesis. -
Q:
Why is the P-H functionality of Dimethyl Hydrogen Phosphite important?
A: The reactive P-H bond allows addition to aldehydes, ketones and alkenes, and supports further condensation, oxidation and coupling reactions. This makes DMP a versatile organophosphorus building block rather than only a simple ester. -
Q:
What is Dimethyl Hydrogen Phosphite used for?
A: It is used as an intermediate in organophosphorus pesticides, pharmaceuticals, lubricant additives, corrosion inhibitors and flame retardants. It also appears in water-treatment chemicals, textile finishing, adhesives and specialty organic synthesis. -
Q:
How should Dimethyl Hydrogen Phosphite be stored and handled?
A: Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, ventilated area away from heat, sparks, open flames, strong oxidizers, acid chlorides, strong bases and moisture. Use suitable PPE because the material is flammable and can be harmful by skin contact.
