Product Description
Dimethylaminoethyl Methacrylate (DMAEMA), CAS 2867-47-2, is also named 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate; the EC/EINECS number is 220-688-8.
Synonyms: 2-(Dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate; DMAEMA; N,N-Dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate; Ageflex FM-1; 2-(Dimethylamino)ethyl 2-methylprop-2-enoate.
CAS: 2867-47-2.
Molecular formula: C₈H₁₅NO₂.
Molecular weight: 157.21.
EC number: 220-688-8.
It is a colorless to light-yellow liquid with an amine odor.
Typical properties include boiling point about 186 °C, melting point about -30 °C, flash point about 64 °C (closed cup), and relative density about 0.93. It is moderately soluble in water and miscible with many organic solvents.
It is widely used as a functional methacrylate monomer to make cationic polymers, flocculants, dispersants, coatings, papermaking additives and functional copolymers for water treatment.
It is also used in adhesives, fiber processing, ion-exchange resins and lubricant additives, and as an intermediate for quaternized monomers by reaction with methyl chloride (DMC) or benzyl chloride.
Confirm assay or purity, color, water content, acidity or amine value, and the type and level of polymerization inhibitor; typical industrial grades are about 99% and contain an inhibitor such as hydroquinone monomethyl ether (MEHQ).
Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dark, well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks, open flames, oxidizers, strong reducing agents and metals; the monomer can polymerize if the inhibitor is depleted. Use vapor controls or local exhaust and appropriate PPE.

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain
-
Q:
What is Dimethylaminoethyl Methacrylate and how is it identified?
A: Dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, commonly called DMAEMA, is a tertiary-amine methacrylate monomer with CAS 2867-47-2, molecular formula C₈H₁₅NO₂ and molecular weight 157.21. It is also named 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate. -
Q:
Which specifications should be checked before purchasing DMAEMA?
A: Confirm assay, water content, color, acidity or amine value, and the type and level of polymerization inhibitor. The batch analysis should state the actual purity and inhibitor package because the monomer is used for controlled polymerization and copolymerization. -
Q:
What is DMAEMA used for?
A: It is used to produce cationic polymers, flocculants, dispersants, coatings, papermaking additives and functional copolymers. Its tertiary amine, ester and methacrylate groups allow quaternization, grafting, copolymerization and pH-responsive polymer design. -
Q:
How should DMAEMA be stored and handled?
A: Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, light-protected area away from heat, sparks, open flames and strong oxidizers. The monomer can polymerize if the inhibitor is depleted, so use temperature controls, PPE and suitable spill containment.
