Diethylenetriamine (DETA, CAS 111-40-0) is a low-molecular-weight polyamine serving as a key intermediate in the production of epoxy curing agents, chelating agents, surfactants, and corrosion inhibitors. Its molecular formula is C4H13N3 with a molecular weight of 103.17 g/mol.
Diethylenetriamine (also known as Bis(2-aminoethyl)amine or N-(2-aminoethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine) appears as a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a characteristic ammonia-like odor. It has a density of 0.955-0.96 g/cm³ at 25°C, boiling point of 206-207°C, and is fully miscible with water and polar organic solvents.
With a minimum purity of 99.5%, DETA is utilized across multiple industrial sectors:
- Epoxy resin curing systems and adhesive formulations
- Gas purification for removal of CO₂ and H₂S
- Water treatment and metal chelation processes
- Synthetic resin and polyamide manufacturing
- Textile auxiliaries and paper reinforcement
