It is a clear, colorless to pale-yellow liquid with a sweet, chloroform-like odor that is slightly soluble in water and miscible with most organic solvents.

Typical properties include melting point about -35.7 °C, boiling point about 83.5 °C, flash point about 13 °C (closed cup), and relative density about 1.253.

It is widely used as an intermediate in the production of vinyl chloride monomer, which is then converted into polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

It is also used as a solvent for waxes, fats, rubber and adhesives, and in selected chlorinated solvent or chemical synthesis applications.
