Product Overview

TMPD-MIB, or 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate, is an ester alcohol with one hydroxyl group. Commercial material commonly contains positional monoisobutyrate isomers. Ester-alcohol content, isomer profile, water, acidity and color help define the coating grade; the quotation identifies the agreed supply specification and packaging.

Film formation in waterborne coatings

During drying, a coalescent helps latex polymer particles soften and merge into a continuous film. In a Styrene Acrylic Emulsion or another waterborne binder, the required TMPD-MIB addition depends on the polymer and drying conditions. Evaluate minimum film-forming temperature (MFFT), film appearance and the coating properties needed for the application. A matching chemical identity or assay does not by itself establish equivalent coating performance.

TMPD-MIB quality checks

GC assay and the chromatographic profile help assess total TMPD-MIB ester-alcohol content and its positional isomers. The report should state which peaks are included and whether the result is calibrated mass percentage or chromatographic area percentage. Water is measured separately, for example by a suitable Karl Fischer method. Acidity needs its reporting basis and units: acidity expressed as acetic-acid equivalent is not interchangeable with an acid number in mg KOH/g. Color can be compared on the Pt-Co scale; any density or refractive-index comparison also needs the stated test temperature.

Related coating raw materials

Dipropylene Glycol n-Butyl Ether (DPnB) is a slow-evaporating glycol-ether coalescent for comparison with TMPD-MIB. Different partitioning between water and polymer, drying behavior and thickener response can change the required formulation. It is not an automatic equal-dose replacement.

Dipropylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether (DPM) and Diethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether (DEGBE) are water-miscible glycol-ether solvents used in coating formulations. Their coupling role and different drying behavior can be useful when selecting the solvent package. They are separate raw materials, not chemically identical substitutes for TMPD-MIB.

These documents support specification review; coating performance depends on the binder and formulation. Keep containers tightly closed and follow the storage, ventilation and protective-equipment instructions in the applicable product SDS. Hazard classification depends on the product and destination, so low volatility does not mean hazard-free handling.
