Product Description

N-Methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), CAS 105-59-9, is a tertiary alkanolamine also named 2,2’-(methylimino)diethanol, methyl diethanolamine or bis(2-hydroxyethyl)methylamine; the EC/EINECS number is 203-312-7.

Synonyms: MDEA; Methyl diethanolamine; 2,2’-(Methylimino)diethanol; Bis(2-hydroxyethyl)methylamine; Methyldiethanolamine.

CAS: 105-59-9.

Molecular formula: C₅H₁₃NO₂.

Molecular weight: 119.16.

EC number: 203-312-7.

It is a colorless to light yellow oily liquid that is soluble in water.

Typical properties include density of about 1.04 g/cm³, melting point of about -21 °C, boiling point of about 247 °C and flash point of about 127 °C.

It is widely used in gas treating to selectively remove hydrogen sulfide from natural gas and refinery streams while reducing carbon dioxide absorption.

It is also used in polyurethane, personal-care and chemical intermediate applications.

As a tertiary alkanolamine, it does not form the fast carbamate with carbon dioxide, so hydrogen sulfide reacts more readily and enables selective H₂S removal with lower regeneration energy.

Confirm assay, water content, color, amine impurities and pH.

Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, ventilated area away from strong oxidizers and acids, and use liquid-chemical handling controls with PPE.

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain

  • Q:

    What is N-Methyldiethanolamine (MDEA)?

A: N-Methyldiethanolamine, commonly called MDEA, has CAS 105-59-9 and molecular formula C₅H₁₃NO₂. It is a tertiary alkanolamine used mainly for selective acid-gas removal.
  • Q:

What is MDEA mainly used for?

A: It is widely used in gas treating to selectively remove hydrogen sulfide from natural gas and refinery streams while reducing carbon dioxide absorption. It is also used in polyurethane, personal-care and chemical intermediate applications.
  • Q:

What specifications should be confirmed before ordering?

A: Confirm assay, water content, color, amine impurities and pH. The batch analysis should state the actual purity and test method because gas-treating performance and foaming tendency can be affected by residual primary or secondary amines.
  • Q:

How should MDEA be stored and handled?

A: Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, ventilated area, away from strong oxidizers and acids. Use liquid-chemical handling controls and PPE, and follow the safety information for spill, disposal and first-aid procedures.
  • Q:

Why is MDEA selective for H2S over carbon dioxide?

A: MDEA is a tertiary alkanolamine, so it does not have the fast carbamate reaction with carbon dioxide that primary and secondary amines have. Hydrogen sulfide reacts more readily with MDEA, allowing selective H2S removal while reducing CO2 pickup in gas-treating systems.
