Diisopropyl Ether CAS 108-20-3

Diisopropyl ether (DIPE), CAS 108-20-3, also known as 2-isopropoxypropane, is a secondary ether used as a specialty extraction solvent because of its low water solubility and convenient boiling range. It is used in solvent extraction for pharmaceuticals and organic acids, and as a solvent for oils, resins, coatings and chromatographic analysis. Confirm the GC assay, water, peroxide and acidity specifications, packaging and documentation needs before ordering; COA, TDS and SDS are available on request.

Main uses: Isopropyl ether is a good solvent for animal, plant and mineral oils, paraffin and resins, and is often blended with other solvents in the dewaxing of paraffin-based oils. As a solvent it is also used in pharmaceuticals, coatings and paint cleaning. Diisopropyl ether has a high octane number and frost resistance, and can be used as a gasoline blending component. It is used for the concentration and recovery of dilute acetic acid or butyric acid solutions, as an extraction solvent for sodium thiocyanate in acrylic fiber wet-spinning, and as a reference material, solvent and extractant for chromatographic analysis.

Packaging: 145 kg/drum (galvanized steel drum)

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain

  • Q:

Are Diisopropyl Ether and Isopropyl Ether the same solvent?

A: Yes. Diisopropyl ether, isopropyl ether and 2-isopropoxypropane identify CAS 108-20-3. They are not diethyl ether, isopropyl acetate or diisopropyl ketone. Use the CAS number to prevent substitution when requesting a quotation.
  • Q:

What is Diisopropyl Ether used for?

A: It is used as a solvent for animal, plant and mineral oils, paraffin and resin, and in pharmaceuticals, coatings, paint cleaning and extraction processes. It is also used as a chromatographic reference material and extractant, so the intended application should be stated.
  • Q:

Which specifications matter when purchasing industrial Diisopropyl Ether?

A: Agree GC assay, water, acidity, colour, nonvolatile residue and peroxide content, including the peroxide test method and release limit. Because ethers can form unstable peroxides during storage, also confirm production date, container condition and stabilizer or storage requirements.
  • Q:

What storage precautions are required for Diisopropyl Ether?

A: Store in tightly closed, compatible containers away from heat, light and oxidizers, and use a peroxide-control program with periodic testing. Confirm stabilizer status and do not retain the material beyond the supplier's recommended storage period.
  • Q:

What are the key physical properties of Diisopropyl Ether?

A: Diisopropyl ether CAS 108-20-3 is a colorless, highly flammable liquid with a relative density around 0.72-0.73, a melting point near -85.9 C and a boiling point around 68-69 C. It is sparingly soluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents, and its low flash point requires strict vapour and ignition control.
