Product Description

Zirconium Dioxide, CAS 1314-23-4, is zirconium(IV) oxide, commonly called zirconia; the EC/EINECS number is 215-227-2.

Synonyms: Zirconia; Zirconium(IV) oxide; Zirconic anhydride; Baddeleyite.

CAS: 1314-23-4.

Molecular formula: ZrO₂.

Molecular weight: 123.22.

EC number: 215-227-2.

It is normally supplied as a white, odorless crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water.

Typical properties include melting point of about 2700 °C, boiling point of about 4300 °C and density of about 5.85 g/cm³.

It is used in advanced and piezoelectric ceramics, refractories, ceramic opacifiers, thermal barrier coatings, abrasives and specialty glass.

It also serves as a source material for stabilized zirconia and cubic zirconia.

Pure zirconia undergoes monoclinic-to-tetragonal phase changes during thermal cycling, while stabilized grades contain yttria, calcia or magnesia to retain a useful phase at room temperature.

Confirm ZrO₂ content, particle size or surface area, phase type, and impurity levels such as silica, titania and hafnia.

It is irritating to the eyes and respiratory system; avoid breathing dust, and use suitable dust controls and PPE.

Store in tightly closed containers in a dry area.

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain

  • Q:

    What is Zirconium Dioxide?

A: Zirconium dioxide, also called zirconia or zirconium(IV) oxide, has CAS 1314-23-4, molecular formula ZrO₂ and molecular weight 123.22. It is normally a white, high-melting crystalline oxide with high refractive index and low thermal expansion.
  • Q:

What is it mainly used for?

A: It is used in advanced and piezoelectric ceramics, refractories, ceramic opacifiers, thermal barrier coatings, and as a source material for stabilized zirconia and cubic zirconia. It is also used in abrasives and specialty glass.
  • Q:

What specifications should be confirmed before ordering?

A: Confirm ZrO₂ content, particle size or surface area, phase type, and impurity levels such as silica, titania and hafnia. If the application requires stabilized or yttria-doped zirconia, confirm whether this material is undoped or already modified.
  • Q:

How should Zirconium Dioxide be stored and handled?

A: Store in tightly closed containers in a dry area. Avoid breathing dust and use suitable dust controls and PPE. Follow the safety information for spill, disposal and first-aid procedures.
  • Q:

What is the difference between pure and stabilized zirconia?

A: Pure zirconia undergoes monoclinic-to-tetragonal phase changes during thermal cycling, while stabilized grades contain yttria, calcia or magnesia to retain a useful phase at room temperature. Stabilized zirconia is preferred for structural ceramics and thermal barrier coatings requiring toughness and dimensional stability.
