Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK), CAS 78-93-3, also known as 2-butanone, is a fast-evaporating ketone solvent for industrial coatings, printing inks, adhesives, rubber processing and specified cleaning systems. For a higher-boiling ketone solvent option, see Methyl Isobutyl Ketone. Its solvent strength and drying profile must be considered with the full resin and co-solvent package. COA, TDS and SDS are available for the offered batch; assay, water, acidity and packing are confirmed against the intended production use.

Product Description
Product Introduction
Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) (CAS 78-93-3), also known as 2-butanone, is a fast-evaporating ketone solvent for coating, adhesive, ink and controlled-cleaning manufacture. The listed solvent is used in blends where rapid flash-off and resin solvency must fit the required drying window; it is not automatically interchangeable with acetone, ethyl acetate or MIBK.
Applications
- Industrial coatings, lacquers and resin-solvent blends
- Solvent-borne adhesives and laminating formulations
- Printing inks and related process-solvent systems
- Equipment cleaning and degreasing where the specified solvent profile is required
Order Specification and Documentation
A MEK order is defined by the intended solvent blend, with agreed purity, water, colour, acidity, distillation range and non-volatile matter where relevant. A batch COA, with the applicable TDS and SDS, is available for the quoted grade. The selected package and quantity are confirmed against the production requirement and the agreed handling route.
For other ketone solvent pages used in coating, adhesive and resin systems, review Methyl Isobutyl Ketone, 3-Pentanone, and Cyclohexanone.
FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain
-
Q:
Is MEK the same as 2-Butanone?
A: Yes. 2-Butanone is the systematic name for Methyl Ethyl Ketone; both names refer to CAS 78-93-3. -
Q:
Can MEK be interchanged directly with another coating solvent?
A: Not automatically. Its fast evaporation and resin-solvency profile can materially affect a formulation. Any change should be evaluated in the complete coating, ink or adhesive system.
