Methanesulfonic Acid (MSA), CAS 75-75-2, is a strong organic sulfonic acid also named methylsulfonic acid; the EC/EINECS number is 200-898-6.

It is a clear, colorless to pale-yellow liquid that is miscible with water.

Typical properties include melting point about 20 °C, boiling point about 167 °C at 1.33 kPa, flash point about 189 °C, and relative density about 1.48. Low-chloride (below 10 ppm) and low-metal grades are available for electronics plating.

It is widely used as an electrolyte and additive in tin, solder and other metal electroplating, where it enables uniform metal deposition and reduces insoluble salt formation.

It is also used as an acid catalyst in esterification, alkylation and polymerization, and as an intermediate or processing aid in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, cleaning and water treatment.

Confirm assay, color, water content, chloride, sulfate, iron and heavy-metal levels; low-chloride and low-metal grades are important for electroplating, electronics and pharmaceutical or sensitive organic synthesis.
