Dimethyl Isophthalate (DMI), CAS 1459-93-4, is an aromatic diester used in polyester resins, coating resins and selected copolyester systems. It is the dimethyl ester of Isophthalic Acid. Dimethyl Terephthalate (DMT) is a related aromatic diester for polyester-resin formulations. Also known as Dimethyl m-phthalate. COA, TDS and SDS are included with product documentation.

Product Description
Product Introduction
Dimethyl Isophthalate (DMI) (CAS 1459-93-4), also called dimethyl 1,3-benzenedicarboxylate, is supplied as a crystalline aromatic diester for selected polyester and resin systems. We offer DMI where the production route specifies an isophthalate component or polymer modifier. Material identity is confirmed as DMI rather than Dimethyl Terephthalate (DMT) or dimethyl phthalate before quotation, because those products are not interchangeable in a resin recipe.
Applications
- Polyester resin manufacture requiring an isophthalate component in the resin design.
- Specialty copolyester and polyester-film formulations using DMI as a comonomer or modification intermediate.
- Polyacrylate resin and other polymer-intermediate manufacturing routes.
- Selected polyester bottle-resin formulations using an isophthalate modifier to manage crystallization behaviour and clarity.
- Specialty resin and plasticizer intermediate synthesis that specifies dimethyl isophthalate.
Grade and Supply Details
We confirm the required assay, colour, acid value, moisture limit and test method against the specified formulation. DMI is normally offered as a white crystalline flake or powder in 25 kg sacks or 500 kg and 1000 kg FIBCs. A batch COA, with the applicable TDS and SDS, is available for the offered material.
For aromatic polyester intermediate comparisons, review Dimethyl Terephthalate, Isophthalic Acid, and Purified Terephthalic Acid.
FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain
-
Q:
Is Dimethyl Isophthalate the same material as DMI?
A: Yes. DMI is the common abbreviation for Dimethyl Isophthalate, also called dimethyl m-phthalate or dimethyl benzene-1,3-dicarboxylate. The material identity is CAS 1459-93-4. -
Q:
How does DMI differ from Dimethyl Terephthalate in polyester production?
A: Both are aromatic diesters, but DMI introduces an isophthalate unit while DMT introduces a terephthalate unit. They are not automatic substitutes; the selected monomer must match the established resin formulation and transesterification route.
