Polyvinyl Alcohol, also called PVA or PVOH, CAS 9002-89-5, is a water-soluble synthetic polymer made by hydrolyzing polyvinyl acetate.

Synonyms: PVA; PVOH; PVAL; Vinyl alcohol polymer; Polyviol; Ethenol homopolymer.

CAS: 9002-89-5.

It has the repeating unit (C2H4O)n; the average molecular weight varies by grade, commonly about 30,000 to 150,000 or higher.

It is a white to off-white powder or granular solid.

It dissolves in hot water and is essentially insoluble in most organic solvents.

Aqueous solutions are about pH 5–7 and form clear, colorless films.

It is odorless, non-toxic and exhibits high tensile strength, flexibility and chemical resistance in formulated products.

Partially hydrolyzed grades, commonly about 86–90% hydrolysis, dissolve more readily in cold or warm water.

Fully hydrolyzed grades, commonly about 98–99% hydrolysis, need hotter water but give higher water resistance and tensile strength.

It is used in paper, wood, textile and specialty adhesives, and in water-soluble films and PVA bags.

It is used as a textile warp sizing agent and in paper surface sizing.

It is added to cement mortars, tile adhesives and putties to improve water retention, workability and bond strength.

Grade numbers such as 17-88 or 24-88 indicate viscosity grade and degree of hydrolysis.
