Molybdenum Disulfide CAS 1317-33-5

Molybdenum Disulfide (CAS 1317-33-5) is a premier solid lubricant utilizing its laminar crystal structure to reduce friction in extreme pressure and high-vacuum environments. Chemically identified as Molybdenum(IV) sulfide or Moly sulfide, this lustrous dark gray powder functions to prevent metal-to-metal contact and seizing where liquid lubricants fail. As a highly stable Inorganic sulfide, it is extensively integrated into lubricating greases, friction materials, and dry film coatings to extend the service life of automotive and industrial machinery. We ensure bulk supply capabilities for this material, providing access to competitive factory pricing and customized specifications to meet specific particle size distribution needs (e.g., Technical Grade vs. Super Fine). Full technical documentation, including MSDS, TDS, COA, is available to support compliance and safety protocols.

Product Description

Our Molybdenum Disulfide is processed through advanced purification and jet-milling technologies to ensure low impurity levels and precise particle size control.

Key Performance Advantages:

  1. Load Bearing: Excellent Extreme Pressure (EP) properties; prevents metal-to-metal contact and galling under heavy loads.
  2. Friction Reduction: Provides a low friction coefficient (0.05 – 0.09) due to its lamellar structure which slides easily.
  3. Temperature Resistance: Stable from cryogenic temperatures up to 400°C in air (and up to 1200°C in vacuum/inert gas).
  4. Chemical Stability: Insoluble in water and resistant to most acids and solvents.

Physicochemical Properties

The following specifications reflect the Superfine Grade (Micronized) commonly requested for high-performance grease and plastic additives.

Applications

  1. Lubricating Greases: The most common application. Added (typically 1% – 3%) to Lithium or Lithium Complex greases to manufacture “Moly Grease” for automotive CV joints, heavy machinery bearings, and chassis points.
  2. Friction Materials: Used in brake linings, brake pads, and clutch facings to stabilize friction, reduce noise (anti-squeal), and reduce wear at high temperatures.
  3. Engineering Plastics: Blended into Nylon (PA), PTFE, and POM to create self-lubricating wear parts like gears, bushings, and slider pads.
  4. Solid Lubricant Coatings: Used in dry film lubricants (bonded coatings) for aerospace and automotive fasteners where liquid lubricants attract dust or evaporate.
  5. Carbon Brushes: Improves the service life and conductivity of brushes in electric motors.

Storage Conditions

  • Environment: Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse.
  • Moisture Control: Crucial. MoS2 powder must be kept dry. If exposed to moisture and air for long periods, it can slowly oxidize to form Molybdenum Trioxide (MoO3), which is abrasive.
  • Packaging: Keep containers tightly sealed when not in use.
  • Shelf Life: 24 months in original unopened packaging.

Safety Precautions

  • General: Molybdenum Disulfide is generally considered non-toxic and is chemically inert.
  • Inhalation: As a fine powder, dust may cause mechanical irritation to the respiratory tract. Use effective dust extraction.
  • PPE: Wear a dust mask (N95 or FFP2) and safety goggles during handling to prevent dust inhalation and eye contact.
  • Skin Contact: Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling.
  • Reactivity: Avoid contact with strong oxidizing agents (e.g., Hydrogen Peroxide) as violent reactions may occur.

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain

  • Q:

What is Molybdenum Disulfide CAS 1317-33-5?

A: Molybdenum Disulfide CAS 1317-33-5 is molybdenum(IV) sulfide, with the formula MoS2 and molecular weight about 160.07 g/mol. It is a dark gray to black solid supplied as a fine powder for lubrication and other high-performance applications.
  • Q:

Why is Molybdenum Disulfide an effective dry lubricant?

A: Its layered hexagonal structure has weak van der Waals forces between sulfur layers, allowing them to slide easily under load. This reduces friction, prevents metal-to-metal contact, and helps resist galling in boundary and extreme-pressure conditions.
  • Q:

What is the difference between fine, superfine, and grease grades?

A: The grades differ mainly in particle size, purity, oil absorption, and sieve residue. Superfine or micronized grades are often selected for stable dispersion in greases and plastics, while coarser technical grades may be used where particle fineness is less critical.
  • Q:

What temperature limits apply to Molybdenum Disulfide?

A: It can perform from cryogenic conditions up to about 400 C in air, and higher temperatures are possible in vacuum or inert gas. Above the practical air-stability limit, oxidation to molybdenum trioxide becomes a concern.
  • Q:

What applications use Molybdenum Disulfide besides grease?

A: It is used in dry-film coatings, plastics and polymer composites, brake and clutch linings, powder metallurgy, and some catalytic applications. In these uses it improves lubricity, wear resistance, and processing behavior.
