Product Description

Ethanol Absolute, CAS 64-17-5, is high-purity low-water ethanol also called anhydrous ethanol or absolute alcohol; the EC/EINECS number is 200-578-6.

Synonyms: Anhydrous Alcohol; Absolute Alcohol; Dehydrated Ethanol; Ethyl alcohol; Anhydrous ethanol.

CAS: 64-17-5.

Molecular formula: C₂H₆O.

Molecular weight: 46.07.

EC number: 200-578-6.

It is a clear, colorless, mobile liquid with a characteristic odor and a burning taste; it readily absorbs moisture from the air.

Typical properties include melting point about -114.1 °C, boiling point about 78.5 °C, flash point about 13 °C (closed cup), relative density about 0.789 and refractive index about 1.361.

It is widely used as a solvent, cleaning agent and reaction medium in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, fragrances, coatings, inks and adhesives.

It is also used as a raw material or carrier solvent in electronic-component and circuit-board cleaning, in ethyl silicate manufacture for anti-corrosion coatings, and as an analytical or laboratory reagent.

Confirm ethanol assay, water content, methanol and related impurities, residue after evaporation and whether the material is denatured; typical grades are 99% or higher and readily absorb atmospheric moisture.

Store in tightly closed, grounded containers in a cool, ventilated flammable-liquid area away from heat, sparks, open flames and strong oxidizers. Prevent moisture ingress, use static controls and appropriate PPE, and keep suitable spill and fire response measures available.

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain

  • Q:

What is Ethanol Absolute and how is it identified?

A: Ethanol absolute is high-purity, low-water ethanol with CAS 64-17-5, molecular formula C₂H₆O and EINECS 200-578-6. It is also called anhydrous ethanol, absolute alcohol or dehydrated ethanol.
  • Q:

Which specifications matter when purchasing absolute ethanol?

A: Confirm ethanol assay, water content, methanol and other impurities, residue after evaporation and whether the material is denatured. The batch analysis should state the actual purity and water specification because anhydrous ethanol readily absorbs atmospheric moisture.
  • Q:

What is Ethanol Absolute used for?

A: It is used as a solvent, cleaning agent and reaction medium in pharmaceuticals, coatings, inks, adhesives, electronic cleaning and chemical synthesis. It is also used as a raw material or carrier in fragrances, agrochemicals and laboratory applications.
  • Q:

How should Ethanol Absolute be stored and handled?

A: Store in tightly closed, grounded containers in a cool, ventilated flammable-liquid storage area away from heat, sparks, open flames and strong oxidizers. Prevent moisture ingress, use static controls and appropriate PPE, and keep suitable spill and fire response measures available.
