Povidone Iodine CAS 25655-41-8

Povidone Iodine (CAS 25655-41-8) is a yellowish-brown amorphous powder comprising a stable chemical complex of polyvinylpyrrolidone and elemental iodine, primarily utilized as a broad-spectrum iodophor in the manufacturing of topical antiseptics and disinfectants. This PVP-Iodine compound functions as a sustained-release agent that liberates free iodine in aqueous solutions to disrupt microbial proteins and nucleic acids, serving as the critical active ingredient in Iodinated povidone based surgical scrubs, skin cleansers, and industrial sanitizers. To support industrial-scale requirements, we provide bulk supply with competitive factory pricing and ensure rigorous quality control through customized specifications alongside standard technical documentation, including MSDS, TDS, COA.

Product Description

Povidone iodine is a loose complex composed of elemental iodine and polymer carriers, and povidone acts as a carrier and assist in solubilization. At room temperature, it is a yellow-brown to brownish-red amorphous powder. Slightly odorous, easily soluble in water or ethanol, aqueous solution is acidic, insoluble in ether, chloroform, acetone, ethane and carbon tetrachloride. Povidone iodine aqueous solution has no iodine tincture disadvantages, light coloring, easy to elute, little irritation to mucous membranes, no need for ethanol deiodization, no corrosive effect, and low toxicity.

Role and use

It is a broad-spectrum powerful bactericidal disinfectant, which has a strong killing effect on viruses, bacteria, fungi and mold spores. This product is less irritating to the skin, has low toxicity, and has a long-lasting effect. Safe and easy to use. It is basically non-irritating to tissues and is used for skin and mucous membrane disinfection, such as cleaning before surgery, disinfection of surgical sites and wounds.

Povidone iodine is generally made into a 10% solution and used as a disinfectant. Effective killing: Newcastle disease, bursa de léin, avian influenza, mycoplasma, Escherichia coli, salmonella, influenza, blue ear disease, etc. It can also kill livestock and poultry parasite eggs and inhibit the breeding of mosquitoes and flies and other insects. It can also be used in fruit trees, crops, fish and shrimp farming.

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain

  • Q:

Is this Povidone Iodine (CAS 25655-41-8) suitable for direct medical application without processing?

A: No, this product is the raw material powder intended for the compounding and formulation of finished dosage forms like solutions, ointments, or gels, and is not a finished consumer product.
  • Q:

What is the mechanism of action for this complex in disinfection products?.

A: It acts as a reservoir that slowly releases free iodine upon contact with biological substrates, providing prolonged germicidal activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi while minimizing irritation compared to elemental iodine tinctures
