Product Description

Benzyl Alcohol, CAS 100-51-6, is phenylmethanol, a primary aromatic alcohol; the EC/EINECS number is 202-859-9.

Synonyms: Phenylmethanol; Benzenemethanol; Phenylcarbinol; Alpha-hydroxytoluene.

CAS: 100-51-6.

Molecular formula: C₇H₈O.

Molecular weight: 108.14.

EC number: 202-859-9.

It is a clear, colorless liquid with a mild aromatic odor; the melting point is about -15 °C, the boiling point about 205 °C and the density about 1.04 g/cm³. It is slightly soluble in water and miscible with most organic solvents.

It occurs naturally as esters in jasmine, hyacinth and other essential oils.

It is produced mainly by hydrolysis of benzyl chloride or by hydrogenation of benzaldehyde.

It is used as a solvent and viscosity reducer in epoxy resins, coatings and inks.

It is used as a broad-spectrum preservative and fragrance ingredient in cosmetics and personal-care products.

It is used as a pharmaceutical excipient and intermediate, and in cleaning products and photographic developers.

It slowly oxidizes in air to benzaldehyde, which gives an almond-like odor; storage conditions and benzaldehyde content are therefore important specifications.

Confirm assay, water, color, acidity, benzaldehyde content and chlorinated impurities; confirm the preservative-use limit for cosmetic applications.

Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, ventilated area away from heat and strong oxidizers; use ventilation and suitable PPE.

FAQ - Technical & Supply Chain

  • Q:

    What is Benzyl Alcohol?

A: Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic primary alcohol with CAS 100-51-6 and molecular formula C₇H₈O. It is a clear, slightly water-soluble liquid used as a solvent and intermediate.
  • Q:

What is Benzyl Alcohol used for?

A: It is used as a solvent, preservative, fragrance ingredient, pharmaceutical intermediate and epoxy reactive diluent. It is also used in coatings, inks and cleaning products.
  • Q:

What specifications should be checked before ordering?

A: Confirm assay, water, color, acidity, benzaldehyde content and chlorinated impurities. The specification summary should state the actual purity and test method, especially for pharmaceutical or personal-care use.
  • Q:

How should Benzyl Alcohol be stored and handled?

A: Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, ventilated area, away from strong oxidizers and heat. Use appropriate ventilation and PPE, and follow the safety information for spill, disposal and first-aid procedures.
  • Q:

Why can Benzyl Alcohol develop an almond-like odor during storage?

A: Benzyl alcohol can slowly oxidize in air to benzaldehyde, which has a characteristic almond-like odor. This is why storage conditions and benzaldehyde content are important specifications, especially for fragrance, pharmaceutical and personal-care grades.
